In 2014, the first new building for critical services on the Health Sciences Campus Gasthuisberg was taken into use, namely Phase IVa, including 28 intensive beds and ten OKA rooms.

UZ Leuven wishes to concentrate all other critical activities in the south zone of the campus, adjacent to this new Phase IVa new building.

Currently, 78 intensive care beds are located in Phase II and Phase III, with 56 beds, or > 50% of the full intensive care bed capacity, being 36 years old (Phase II), and the remaining 22 beds already 24 years old. The short-term investment in a new infrastructure for these intensive beds is necessary and unavoidable.

In the planned new building, 62 intensive beds and twelve beds for burns will be accommodated, as well as twenty beds in an isolation unit, which are very similar in terms of infrastructural and technical requirements to intensive care beds and therefore find their logical location in this new building.

One unit, intended for intensive care, is located next to the operating theatre, in the existing infrastructure and in the vicinity of Phase IVa Critical Services I and adjacent to the planned new construction. Given its strategic location, this unit will be renovated in situ into a 16-bed unit.

Given the compactness of the campus, it is also unavoidable to accommodate the expansion of the OKA and the surgical day center (six rooms in total) and the expansion of the logistics zone for the operating theater in this building, given the proximity of the services involved. to the existing, recently renovated OKA.
